Bright, Amy. "Private Transit." Here Be Monsters 7 (2012): 39-52.

Her eyes glue to the football game. Number 76 fumbles the football, and a dog pile of men stops its awkward bounce. A green bean, half chewed, drops out of the girl’s mouth and back onto her plate. It’s mushed with teeth marks.

“That’s kind of gross,” I tell her. She shrugs and eats around it.

Little kids wear bangs like nobody’s business. They sit heavy and full and stop right before their eyeballs get covered up. I sat in the bathroom for a whole afternoon once, trying to get little kid bangs. Instead I got no bangs, incremental cuts all the way up my forehead.

Bright, Amy. “Look At It This Way.” character i (Fall 2011): 17-25.

Devon's psychologist has asked him to write four letters to anybody he wants to. He chooses Mrs. Shipman, who is part of the reason his brother is in jail.

"We're up on the roof where the wood is all spongy with rot. I put my foot through and now Luce and me are scrunched up together in the corner trying to avoid the hole. We're sitting across from the jail. It's a big building. It's double the size of city hall, maybe triple the size of our small one-gate airport. The jail even has baseball fields circled by a fence and mowed in a neat buzz cut. We asked Matt about those once."
